By early 2024, every serious B2B company had access to the same foundational AI capabilities through APIs that cost pennies on the dollar. The CTO who said “we don’t need AI people, our engineers can figure it out “ is now 12 months behind companies that hired AI-native talent in early 2024.
Anyhow the one thing I learned, beyond getting help screening and hiring for these positions from domain experts, is to look for Flags. For signs the prospective hire just won’t work out, no matter how strong they might look on paper. Why join a start-up? Well reason #1 is personal and career advancement. Not for start-ups.
They hire a VP of Sales who doesn’t want to sell or learn the product. You also don’t want to hire a VP of Sales who won’t carry a bag. If you joined a startup at $2M and wanted to get to $6M with reps doing $400k, that VP of Sales would need to hire ten reps. 90% of the time, sales falls when a founder steps out of it.

In fact, one of our decisions, in 2007, we had to decide, are we going to sell SaaS or are we going to be an on?prem It’s an area that doesn’t get enough focus.
The explosion of SaaS tools (and with it, data silos) together creates a need for a cross-functional, operations role to support go-to-market teams. These roles are filled by engineers that roll up to the CMO/COO (not CTO) as part of a growth team. But first, we need to set some context (albeit from the perspective of B2BSaaS).
