I’d never been exposed to softwaredevelopers and the mysterious world of coding. I was introduced to a team of software engineers who’d been working on tech that aligned audio and text so that you could follow it like karaoke. I remember saying to the team, “We just invented the future.” That gives me credibility.
I was managing a team of 15 and the company had grown to about 140 employees. They were clearly property management and softwaredevelopment, and as someone that was hired to accelerate Buildium’s growth I immediately saw countless opportunities to grow the company by moving into new markets. We mostly succeeded.
Before I joined the venturecapital industry many years ago, I was a softwaredeveloper, and I worked for a startup around the 2000 time period. Now, I’m a venturecapital investor. Many of these are names that you know, and this is actually the largest we’ve seen in history.
You can’t have a top down budget created by an executive team and approved by the board, while also having self managed teams that are empowered to make decisions by sensing and responding to what the market and the business is telling them. The executive team needed this plan to drive alignment.
If you take a look at a 50 person sales team, you’ll likely find it to be very data-driven. They usually track low-level metrics about their app performance or errors, and agile teams have burn-down charts. Previous attempts failed or didn’t get a lot of adoption, usually because of some combination of these issues: Poor data quality.
