My job was to look at what was happening in the world economy – it was like 2010 at the time, and so everything was kind of falling apart – and then look at data about it and try to come up with recommendations about what policymakers should do. However, we’ve had a great team. In that sense, it’s been very challenging.

Parse was a mobile app platform that got acquired by Facebook. At Twilio, I think my entire job there my first two years was throwing t-shirts at people, because everyone had a Twilio t-shirt I think in the developer community in 2010, and that was our marketing strategy. I have a team of people who work on numbers.

So we’re really proud of that and our whole team is really proud of that. And one thing that’s been really cool starting the company 10 years ago in an economic downturn to today, about six months ago Matthew and I and our team took the company public on the New York Stock Exchange. And so this huge shift was going on.

You can’t have a top down budget created by an executive team and approved by the board, while also having self managed teams that are empowered to make decisions by sensing and responding to what the market and the business is telling them.
