Member Spotlight - Skillsoft

May 14, 2020

I’m delighted to share the first of what will be a regular feature highlighting the OPEXEngine member companies. The purpose of the spotlight series is to offer our members an opportunity to share new initiatives, insights, ideas, and benchmarking best practices with the SaaS and Software finance community.

Special thanks to Bobby Jenkins, CFO of Skillsoft, an Enterprise level member, for agreeing to be the first in this series. Bobby spoke with my colleague, Donna Rice, this week to discuss how Skillsoft is evolving their business in light of the rapidly shifting business world.

Please describe your business model and who your customers are:

Our mission -- We believe every person has the potential to be amazing.  And that there’s a better way to bring out what they already have in them.

We know this because we’ve lived it. We’ve had the honor of training more people than anyone. We help democratize learning with powerful cloud-based tools and unmatched enterprise-wide smarts and skills.  And like our customers, we’re always evolving – making sure individuals, teams, and enterprises have exactly what they need to unleash their edge.We achieve this mission through two businesses.  Our content business currently has three primary verticals: leadership and business, compliance, and technology.  The Company distributes content through Percipio, an intelligent online learning experience platform that that includes our engaging content, curated into nearly 700 channels, with content being added all the time.  Our SumTotal LMS platform thrives in complex learning environments and is a leading partner for compliance critical customers and large enterprises.  Our offerings help ensure our clients have the most up-to-date knowledge on the most critical subjects at a fraction of classroom training costs.

Have you already, or are you considering, evolving the business to cope with the new business environment we are all dealing with?

Since the onset of the pandemic in March, we have quickly pivoted our curriculum and content roadmaps to develop new learning content that is highly salient to the market.Given the unprecedented nature of these events, we have made these learning resources universally available to not only customers, but also available to individual learners through our website and social platforms, such as YouTube. We’ve pulled together customer favorites to help leaders and their staff adapt during these difficult times and created our Business Continuity Learning Center, as well as a COVID-19 Awareness and Safety Video available to all here.  In addition, we have launched a number of new courses, including: Leading in the Post-Pandemic Workplace; Navigating the Post-Pandemic Workplace; Business Strategies for the Post-Pandemic Economy; Resuming Retail or Restaurant Operations; and Post-Pandemic New Bootcamp: Leading in the New Normal.

Are you doing virtual events, releasing new research, etc. that you would want to share with the SaaS and Software community?

The last week of May, we will be hosting a virtual bootcamp for business leaders across all industries, around Leading in the New Normal.  This three-day virtual training event will focus on personal Resilience, Wellness, Engagement, as well as the leader’s impact to their organization, and the implications and consideration for their workplace.Plus, we just held our Perspectives 2020, a full day of outstanding speakers such as Dr. Heidi Grant, panel discussions, case studies and more. You can register here for access to the recorded sessions.

Tell us how you use benchmarking in your business?

I joined Skillsoft in Nov 2019.  As we completed the planning process for the current year, we used benchmarking data from various sources. I needed a better solution and decided on OPEXEngine since its focus is on SaaS companies and has a unique approach to collecting data.
