Even A Slightly Too High Burn Rate Can Get Out of Control

SaaStr

There’s a pattern I see again and again, probably with 30% of venture-backed start-ups, maybe 40%. Their burn rate sneaks up on them, and becomes a bit out of control — without feeling like it. This usually doesn’t happen in the very early days, when you just have a few employees and almost no real marketing or sales expense. But it starts to creep up on you as early as $1m ARR.

The 2 Things To Look For — At a Minimum — In Any First VP of Sales

SaaStr

I’ve written a lot about this, but for most start-ups, you can boil it down to two criteria any first VP of Sales just has to meet: Has she built at least a small team before? Have they hired at least 2–3 reps that have performed well? This isn’t the same as having been a great rep herself, or having inherited a team. If you can hire 2–3 great ones, you can likely scale and hire 20–30.

How Much Should the CEO Pay Themselves?

SaaStr

There’s a lot of stuff written on how much to pay yourself as CEO. Christoph Janz has a great spreadsheet of quantitative thoughts here. Having thought a bunch about it, I think I can distill it down to 3 general guidelines: In the very early days, the CEO should be one of the worst paid. Until you have material revenues and/or funding, the CEO should ideally only take out the minimum she needs.

Dear SaaStr: What Would a Good Sales Comp Plan for a B2B SaaS Company with ACV ~$1,200 look like?

SaaStr

Q: What would a good Sales Comp Plan for a B2B SaaS Company with ACV ~$1,200 / ARPU ~$100 look like? This is a pretty low price point for a sales-driven SaaS model, but it can be done. You do have to be ruthlessly efficient, however. Roughly speaking, most SaaS sales comp plans end up being 10/10 plans. 10% of a deal paid out as base salary, 10% based out as bonus. 20% of the total deal size goes back to sales reps in base comp + salary.
