Maturity Levels in Business Intelligence

Maturity Levels in Business Intelligence

Where do we stand? And how do we improve?

The world of Business Intelligence (BI) can be complicated to navigate. With many moving pieces, multiple technologies, and many different people and departments being impacted, it can be challenging to know what steps need to be taken for your organization to level up and reach the next stage of sophistication.

The first step to growing your BI Maturity is understanding where you are today. CloudKettle has a strong team of Business Analysts that help clients understand their current state. Using tools such as User Stories, we help our clients clearly understand where they are and where they want to be.

To help in this process, we’ve created a high-level summary of key cultural and process-driven behaviors that have been consistent across many organizations we’ve worked with in the past. Regardless of the technologies or types of reporting being performed, these indicators are very helpful when it comes to gauging where a company is along their BI journey.

Levels of business intelligence maturity

Level 1 – Novice BI

  • Immaturity in reporting
  • Decision making is not data driven at the organizational level
  • No real data team exists
  • No dedicated BI/Reporting tools
  • Most (if not all) reporting happens in spreadsheets

Level 2 – Developing BI

  • Data is siloed
  • A small number of data experts may exist
  • Some teams are more data driven than others
  • Still reliant on sheets, and analysts; native reporting tools may be used
  • Discrepancies in complexity of data used across teams
  • No self service solutions exist
  • No governance processes in place for reporting

Level 3 – Centralized BI

  • Data is somewhat centralized
  • Data may not be easily accessible to all business users
  • Limited self-service solutions
  • Data is mostly descriptive/minimal diagnostic analytics
  • Data is a tool to measure performance rather than an asset to guide business decisions

Level 4 – Sophisticated BI

  • There are teams/individuals dedicated to data experimentation
  • Citizen analysts thrive and self-service solutions are widely used
  • Predictive and prescriptive analytics are widely used and trusted
  • Reverse ETL exists
  • Data is viewed as a critical asset, not just a tool to track performance

If any of the above levels sound like your organization – Congratulations! You’ve just taken a major step by identifying where you are. Now you can start planning the steps to get to where you want to be in terms of Business Intelligence Maturity.
